Mighty Heart is a "Trumpet Miniature" I dedicated to one of my first trumpet teachers, Michael Hamm. Mr. Hamm was my band director at Wahiawa Intermediate, on the island of Oahu. Even though I was never signed up for formal lessons with him, Mr. Hamm gave me impromptu lessons during lunch for two years. Most of these lessons were out of the Arban book.

For a while I was in contact with him and we exchanged emails, letters and gifts over the years. Now, I don't get responses from him, and I have to wonder if he is okay. I hope he is. He was a huge influence to me in my music.

What are Miniatures?

My definition of a miniature is a legitimate musical composition that fits on one page. Other composers may have different definitions. Mine is a one sheet piece of music. I sometimes compose miniatures as gifts.

In this case, Mighty Heart was composed to be included in the The Calling book.
