You Are The Sunshine Of My Life - Cover by Sabrina the Songstress

I have received numerous requests to sing this song at mostly weddings and anniversary celebrations (i.e., marriage anniversaries). It is with great joy and honor that I accept such requests as this is the perfect love song. I enjoy singing this song as well as other hit songs written by the person I call the “master songwriter” Stevie Wonder.

A bit of history and trivia: Did you know that Stevie Wonder was a self-taught musician who learned to play the piano, drums and harmonica before the age of 10? He was only 11 years old when in 1961 he was discovered by Johnny White who was a member of the Motown band called the Miracles. Johnny presented Stevie to Motown President Berry Gordy Jr. who signed him immediately - and the rest is history.

I was about five years of age when 12-year old Stevie Wonder (then nicknamed Little Stevie Wonder by Barry Gordy) came on to the mainstream music scene with his hit record called “Fingertips.” Stevie was the talk of the town, the State, the Country, the Globe. A year later the live version of Fingertips was released and reached #1 on the music charts. I can remember (like it was yesterday) everyone, including me the five-year old girl dancing to Fingertips at a Summertime Bar-b-que in a family friend’s backyard in Oak Park, Sacramento. “Who in the world was this 12-year old boy who vigorously played the harmonica along with this big band/orchestra?” - Everyone was asking. Little Stevie Wonder literally took the world by storm and has been doing so ever since. With 25 Grammy Awards and numerous other awards and recognitions, he is one of the most celebrated singers/songwriters and producers on the planet through the next 4 decades. Most notable was his work as a civil rights activist including spearheading the movement to make Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday; thus came the song “Happy Birthday” to honor the Late Dr. King. Also, his collaboration with former Beatles member, Paul McCartney on the song “Ebony and Ivory”; his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the youngest person to be honored by the Kennedy Center; the first blind recipient of an Academy Award in 1985; his performance of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” at the then Presidential Nominee, Barack Obama’s acceptance speech; and so much more! It would take pages of script to list all of Stevie’s accomplishments.

The song, “You are the Sunshine of My Life” was released in 1972 on Stevie’s Talking Book album; and is among a string of hit records and albums released for decades to come. Born on May 13, 1950, as Steveland Hardaway Judkins, I celebrate this living legend literally as his 72nd birthday “earth day” approaches with the release of this YouTube video, exactly 60 years after the release of his first Motown hit record. Happy birthday Stevie!
