Tech Tip: Alex Van Halen Dampening Hack!
.
.
.
This drum heck was on that I saw Art of Drumming did for their video 5 Legendary snare sound. One of their snare sounds was from Van Halen’s song Hot for Teacher.
This A-style gaffer tape dampening under the snare drum batter head was a method that Alex Van Halen seems to use because of limited options with drum heads.
As I mentioned before, the options for drum heads we have today were not options back when Alex was playing. This lack of options caused him to be more creative in how he got an open yet dry snare drum sound.
Art of Drumming did use a Remo Controlled sound clear drum head for their example, but I didn’t have that drumhead on hand. Instead, I used a Remo Emperor Vintage clear and added the gaffer tape underneath.
The final sound was a focused and dry sound that kept the tape away from the playing surface.
Remember, nowadays you can do this with head choice and some deepening. It’s just fun to experiment and see how the great were creative with what they had.
What do you guys think? Have you ever given this hack a try before? Leave a comment below & let’s talk about it!
Anyways, have a wonderful day!! Love you, guys! Stay Safe! Okay. Byeeeee.
