I am always fascinated by the human intent of taking an idea with a different approach and finding ways to improve or enhance it.

This intent is what Craig McKean has done with AVA Drums.

I am thrilled to continue to test out this snare drum and see all the possibilities of sound it has to offer.

Anyway, let’s get into the details.

AVA 14” x 6.5” Wenge Thin Stave snare drum:

“This shell has 5mm thick staves. This model now also utilizes the 45-degree re-ring design.
The re-rings have the the grain and glue lines running at 45 degrees to the main shell.Rings are approximately 1″ thick on this model drum.

This build was inspired by acoustic guitar construction.
Thin shell/body like a thin acoustic sound board and using the reinforcement rings as the stability/structure.

Double ended tube lugs evenly disperse tension load.
Responsive and super articulate.
From a whisper to a roar,
Defies many assumed logics!
Combines the projection of a thicker shell with the body and dexterity of a thinner shell.”

SPECS:

- Size/depth: 14” x 6.5”
- Shell: 5mm Wenge with about 1” thick 45° grain Maple re-rings.
- Hoops: Die-cast (top & bottom)
- Throw off/butt: Trick throw off & butt - Bearing Edges: 3/16 round over to 30 degree inner bearing edges- Lugs: 10 Tube lug configuration
- Snares: 42 strand wires
- Drum heads: Remo Controlled Sound coated (batter), Remo Ambassador Snare side (resonant)
