Les Miserables is a highly successful musical, first performed in Paris in 1980, with a “through-sung” score (without spoken dialogue). It is based on the well known 19th century French novel of the same name (meaning “The Wretched”) by Victor Hugo, which centers on the pursuit of an escaped prisoner, Jean Valjean, by the determined Inspector Javert. Another important character is Cosette, who is first encounter as an eight-year-old girl sent to live in a household where she is put to work and treated poorly. She sings a song, in an unusual mixture of 3/4, 2/4 and 4/4 time, in which she dreams of a castle on a cloud where she will find friendship and an easier life.
