Oliver! is a musical written in 1960 by the British composer Lionel Bart and based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. In 1968 became a musical drama film directed by Carol Reed, which British Film Institute ranked as the 77th greatest British film of the 20th century.
Oliver is a poor young London boy who is thrown out of the workhouse for daring to ask for a second helping of food, and is sent to work for an undertaker’s. There he gets into more trouble by being involved in a fight and is thrown into the cellar. At the point he sings a despairing song wondering whether he will ever find love.
