The lesson begins with the 5 easy chord shapes needed to play this classic traditional American folk song: Am, C, D, F, E. The F chord can be a barre chord, but I have a really simple way to play it that makes this one of the easier songs for a beginner to learn on the guitar.

We go over some tips that make the switches easier, like leaving certain fingers down as you switch chords, and then we practice them together using the chord progression as a guideline, playing downstrokes only and working out accurate clean chord switching.

The strumming pattern for this one couldn't be simpler. Since this song is in 6-8 time we have to count it a particular way. 1+a 2+a. The time signature is doing all the work, so rather than play some complex string of down and up strokes, focusing on the dynamics of our playing and emphasizing certain beats is going to not only be simpler to accomplish but create a better end product. This song is perfect for teaching you how to feel 6-8 time and we're going to take advantage of that by using a strumming pattern that emphasizes this time signature!

With our chords and strumming we can play through the Interlude. Once we've learned it, the verse is just a couple of chords different. We take a look at the chord progression, isolate it, add the strumming, go through all of this all over again and play it together nice and slow.

Finally, there's an ending that uses the D minor chord. This is totally optional - it's exclusive to the animals version of this song. We figure out how and where to play it and then we go over how to play the entire song.

If you'd like to practice the entire song with me AND get a chord chart/TAB - there's a full playthrough available on my Patreon page, where I play through the entire song, start to finish. More information on that here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/67314431
