John Coltrane’s Giant Steps is without a doubt one of the most challenging harmonic progressions for bass players to play over with authority and cohesiveness. In the late 50’s, John Coltrane was experimenting with different harmonic substitutions while studying the Schillinger System of Composition. It was there that he discovered the ‘Three Tonics System of Harmony’ and wrote Giant Steps based around this theory. In this bass lessons, we're going to explore how to play walking bass lines over the changes of Giant Steps.
