Billboard Magazine called 1984 as the ‘greatest year ever in pop music.’ I don’t often agree with the music press, but I have to say that I concur with that evaluation. Some of the best singles and albums were released in ’84, including many of my all-time favorites. To celebrate that glorious, impactful year in music, we’re counting down the Ten Best Songs of 1984. Including Night Ranger's Sister Christian one where the singer let the drummer have a go at recording the vocals and it became the band’s biggest song… Another, Prince's Let's Go Crazy, is a party anthem that most people don’t realize is about God and one where Billy Joel hit a high note in the chorus that was so grand he knew he would never be able to hit the notes again and sure enough on his next tour he had to bring in a backup singer to nail it. We have many of the artists participating in this celebration of the best song of music’s best year. See if you agree with my picks, next on Professor of Rock.

Kicking off our countdown the Ten Best Songs released in 1984…At #10…. Rock You Like a Hurricane by the Scorpions- the most successful band ever to come out of Germany in America and the UK…

It’s been 40 years since the greatest year in music history… 1984 and today I’m going to count down my picks for the ten greatest top 40 hits of that Perfect year. My criteria is that the song had to peak in the top 40 in 1984. It was the toughest top 10 I’ve ever had to do. I have plenty of honorable mentions but let’s get into it. Coming in at #10 I have the scorcher. Rock You Like a Hurricane by Scorpions. The Scorps' signature song was written by their frontman and co-founder, Klaus Meine, and his co-founding partner, lead guitarist Rudolf Schenker, along with drummer Herman Rarebell. Unlike Klaus Meine's more romantic and introspective songs, Rock You Like a Hurricane dives headfirst into raw animal magnetism, embodying the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll lifestyle of the boys from Hannover. With vivid imagery like a purring cat, a hungry wolf, and a cage of lust, the song captures their untamed spirit. The song was originally very dirty. Replace the song rock with the f-bomb and you get the idea of what the song was going to be. Problem is, it would never have been a hit! Breaking down the dynamics of the song, one key element is the tension between the verses and the chorus. Rudolf recalls Klaus revisiting the lyrics about nine times, trying to get the song to click. Then, on the tenth attempt, everything fell into place, and they locked into the song’s raw, straight-ahead power.
