Monumental Monday: Learn to recognize Phasing issues.

Before I rant lol I really want to encourage you all to use headphones so you can hear the differences between these comparisons. It’s listening intensive!

To start off, as drummers who are not professional engineers there are a lot of things in the recording space that slip by the cracks.

Phasing is one of those things that is obvious when you recognize it but can go undetected for along time without knowing it.

When something is out of phase it means it is not working together with the other microphones around it. To fix the problematic microphone you need to flip it out of phase to then be in phase with all the other microphones being used.

For me that was the case for a long time until a really close friend of mine who is a professional studio engineer told me that something was out of phase.

This means that my low end (around 200hz - 500hz) in my kick, toms and snare was nonexistent. It sounded shallow and tiny instead of full and vibrant.

This is just something that you need to keep an eye out on when recording yourself. Don’t be scared or too prideful to ask someone who is the professional if you are doing it wrong.

It will absolutely help you in the long run!!

What did you guys think? Did you hear the difference? Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Have a wonderful start to your week y’all!! Love you guys! Stay Safe! Okay. Byeeeee.
