Chord and Scale exercises are a dime a dozen. You can probably think of over 100 of them if you really sat and concentrated on it for the next 5 or 10 minutes. That said, when it comes to the most powerful chord and scale exercises, a musicians options become that much more limited - especially when you look for ones that require you to change the harmony from Diatonic, into Non-Diatonic.

Confused? No problem, you’ll get it. I’ll show you the most powerful harmony exercise you can do to develop the use of non-diatonic chords. All it requires is a basic knowledge of triad and seventh chord harmony, a practice progression to help you learn how it works, and the time to test ideas of your own.

This particular harmony exercise will help with applying non-functioning chords into any piece of music. In fact, any way you look at it, this is a great functional as well as, non-functional harmonic exercise.

The exercise incorporates chord movement from outside of the key and helps the composer’s ear be trained for non-diatonic chord function. Not every chord workout should consist of this approach, but when used correctly it’s amazing!
