In this Jazz Drummer Q-Tip of the Week drum set lesson, I break down and demonstrate a MAGIC DRUM SOUND YOU'RE NOT USING ENOUGH. That sound is the rim shot which can be used on the snare or the toms. This is truly a magic drum sound you're not using enough in the modern way drummers like Roy Haynes, Eric Harland, Buddy Rich, Gregory Hutchinson, Gene Krupa and Bill Stewart use it. The rim shot can add more dynamic range and excitement to your playing. I will break down the cross-stick kind of rim shot in another lesson.
