At Matariki, we remember those who have passed in the previous year, as well all those we have loved who have passed. The Matariki star, Pōhutukawa, reminds us to reflect on this - in Māori lore, when a person passes, they travel along the spirit path (Te Ara Wairua) to the tip of the North Island at Te Rerenga Wairua, where the follow the root of a solitary pōhutukawa tree to the next world.
