Yo trumpet friends - it's time for Day 6 of Editions Bim's "100 Days of Trumpet Practice" book: the introduction of the skill category "range" (I group low/high register and dynamic range together) and the always ugly, often controversial, not my strong suit...pedal tones! Hooray!
If you hate pedal tones (my friend and hero, the legendary Eric Miyashiro, described them to me as "poison" for his chops), feel free to skip this exercise ???? - but as you can see, you've got a pretty good routine in place of 30-60 minutes by Day 6.
I find them helpful, even though I'm not very good at them. I'm in awe of pedal tone masters like Arturo Sandoval and Wiff Rudd.
Here are some notes from the book:
Brass players cite a number of different benefits to practicing pedal tones, but here are the two most obvious ones:
1. You will energize your breathing by practicing them (they require a lot of air).
2. You will develop a range of the instrument that, while perhaps undervalued by trumpeters, has been utilized by modern composers for decades now.
I also find them similar to stretching exercises at the end of a gym workout: they release tension and encourage good blood flow to the embouchure muscles.
