➡️ My first time hearing "The Real Me" from 1973's "Quadrophenia" by THE WHO was an intense experience! This is practically a bass solo "piece" smoothly disguised as a powerful rock anthem. I didn't grow up with much exposure to The Who, and I'm learning that the musical legacy left by bassist John Entwistle is embedded in my musical DNA whether I like it or not. Reading that the entire bass track was improvised in ONE TAKE beforehand really allowed me to hear how "in tune" he was with his bandmates while still composing a thoughtful, intuitive bass part that ticks all the right boxes. I discuss John's smooth-yet-powerful bass tone, his note choices, how he makes a one-chord song sound so complex, how his lead-bass licks complement Roger Daltrey's vocal melodies, how this whole song is pure musical chaos, and much more! ????????????????????
