I feel like we’re on a hot streak with punk analysis episodes! It’s been a blast following everyone's lead since hearing Rancid for the very first time. Once again, I couldn’t ignore the unanimous ask for NOFX and their song “Idiots Are Taking Over”, so join me for my very first listen! This track starts with an almost bizarre bass intro that shows up throughout the song, but I was quickly distracted by the poppier composition with some really colorful chord progressions which I did not expect! Word on the street is that Fat Mike heavily relies on upstrokes, so I’m curious to explore more of their discography to see if I can decipher how it’s done. I discuss the song’s composition and their use of “borrowing” chords from adjacent key signatures, why I also tend to start technical bass lines with upstrokes (which is a big part of why I took this request), how SMOOTHLY the guitar and bass switch roles during the reggae “breakdown” section, and more!
