You guys REALLY wanted me to hear @rancid and their track "Maxwell Murder", and I'm finally hearing the band for the first time! I wasn't sure what to expect from an 85-second track, but I don't think you could've packed more action into this zinger of a bass feature. Matt Freeman plays with a heavy-handed intensity and rips gritty grooves, walking bass lines, and one of the coolest bass solos I've ever heard. In this video I discuss the track's composition, use of chromaticism and leading tones in the bass lines, and why Matt's note choices completely drive the song. Most importantly, I break down this wild bass solo and discuss the "less is more" approach with the note choices and why catchy phrasing SO much more important than running scales in solos. Say hello to your newest RANCID fan! ????????????
